Jozani Forest: Home of the Red Colobus Monkey Guide

Escape the beaches and immerse yourself in the lush greenery of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar's only national park. This protected area is a haven for biodiversity, most famously known as the home of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey. The park offers a unique opportunity to observe these primates in their natural habitat, along with a variety of other wildlife and plant species. Prepare for a captivating journey through a diverse ecosystem. Jozani Forest has a long history of conservation efforts. Recognizing the importance of preserving the unique flora and fauna of Zanzibar, the area was designated as a forest reserve in the 1960s. Over time, the focus shifted towards community-based conservation, involving local communities in the management and protection of the park. This approach has been crucial in ensuring the long-term survival of the red colobus monkeys and other species. The park also plays a vital role in protecting the island's water resources and preventing soil erosion. A visit to Jozani Forest typically involves a guided walk through the forest trails, where you can observe the red colobus monkeys up close. These playful primates are known for their distinctive red fur and social behavior. The park also features a mangrove boardwalk, allowing you to explore the unique mangrove ecosystem and learn about its ecological importance. Other activities include birdwatching, exploring the medicinal plant trail, and visiting the nearby Pete-Jozani Marine Conservation Area.
