Prison Island (Changuu Island) Guide
Escape to Paradise: History, Giant Tortoises, and Turquoise Waters Await! Guide
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a captivating day trip from Stone Town, offering a unique blend of history, wildlife encounters, and stunning natural beauty. Forget any preconceived notions of a grim penal colony; this island is now a sanctuary for giant tortoises and a haven for relaxation. Imagine yourself basking on pristine beaches, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and learning about the island's intriguing past – all in one unforgettable excursion. The island's history is far more complex than its name suggests. Originally intended as a prison for rebellious slaves and later a quarantine station for yellow fever outbreaks, it never actually served its primary purpose as a long-term penal facility. In 1919, the British Governor of Seychelles gifted four Aldabra giant tortoises to Zanzibar, and these magnificent creatures became the island's most famous residents. Today, hundreds of tortoises roam freely, ranging in age from youngsters to centenarians, offering a truly remarkable wildlife experience. A trip to Prison Island offers a variety of activities. The highlight for many is undoubtedly interacting with the giant tortoises. You can feed them (vegetation is provided), observe their slow and deliberate movements, and even learn about their conservation. Beyond the tortoises, the island boasts excellent snorkeling opportunities in the surrounding coral reefs. The clear, warm waters are teeming with colorful fish and vibrant marine life. Relax on the beach, soak up the sun, or take a guided tour to learn more about the island's history and ecology. For lunch, many tours include a delicious seafood barbecue on the beach, allowing you to savor the flavors of Zanzibar while enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
Transportation
The only way to reach Prison Island is by boat from Stone Town. Numerous tour operators offer excursions, typically lasting around 3-4 hours. You can find boats departing from the beach near the Forodhani Gardens. Negotiate the price beforehand, and ensure the boat is equipped with life jackets. The boat ride itself is a scenic experience, offering stunning views of Stone Town's skyline.
