Shanga Workshop Guide
Shanga Workshop: Empowering Artisans, Creating Beauty Guide
Discover the inspiring work of Shanga Workshop, a social enterprise dedicated to empowering disabled artisans in Tanzania. Located on the grounds of the Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, Shanga creates beautiful and unique jewelry, glassware, and home decor items using recycled materials. A visit to Shanga is not only a chance to purchase handcrafted souvenirs but also an opportunity to support a worthy cause and witness the incredible talent and resilience of the artisans. Shanga was founded with the aim of providing employment and training opportunities for disabled individuals in the Arusha region. The workshop offers a supportive and inclusive environment where artisans can develop their skills, gain financial independence, and build self-esteem. By purchasing Shanga products, visitors directly contribute to the sustainability of the project and the well-being of the artisans and their families. At Shanga, you can take a tour of the workshop and observe the artisans at work, creating stunning pieces from recycled glass, beads, and other materials. You can also participate in a glassblowing demonstration or try your hand at bead making. The Shanga shop offers a wide selection of handcrafted items, perfect for souvenirs or gifts. The Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, where Shanga is located, also offers dining options, allowing you to enjoy a meal or coffee while supporting the project.
Transportation
Shanga Workshop is located at the Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, which is a short taxi or private transfer ride from Arusha town. Many tour operators include a visit to Shanga as part of their itinerary. You can also take a 'dala-dala' (local minibus) heading towards Usa River and ask to be dropped off near the Arusha Coffee Lodge, but this option is less convenient. It's best to arrange transportation through your hotel or a local tour operator. The drive from Arusha typically takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic.
