Shifen Old Street Guide
Shifen Old Street: Where Sky Lanterns Light Up History Guide
Shifen Old Street is a charming railway town nestled in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City, Taiwan. More than just a street, it's a living, breathing piece of history where the railway tracks run directly through the heart of the community. Imagine strolling along a narrow lane, browsing quaint shops, and then suddenly having to step aside as a train rumbles past – it's an experience unlike any other! Shifen is famous for its sky lanterns, which visitors can decorate with wishes and release into the sky, creating a truly magical atmosphere. Shifen's history is intertwined with the coal mining industry that thrived in the area during the early 20th century. The railway line was originally built to transport coal, and the town grew around it. As the coal industry declined, Shifen reinvented itself as a tourist destination, capitalizing on its unique railway setting and the tradition of releasing sky lanterns. The old street retains much of its original charm, with traditional buildings and a laid-back atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. The Shifen Waterfall, a short walk from the old street, is another natural attraction that draws visitors to the area. The main activity in Shifen is undoubtedly releasing a sky lantern. You can purchase a lantern from one of the many shops lining the street, choose your colors (each color represents a different type of wish, such as health, wealth, or love), and write your hopes and dreams on its sides. Then, with the help of the shop owner, you'll light the lantern and watch it float away into the sky. Besides sky lanterns, you can also explore the shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, and snacks. Don't miss the opportunity to try some of the local delicacies, such as peanut ice cream rolls and taro balls. A short walk will take you to the impressive Shifen Waterfall, often called the "Little Niagara of Taiwan."
