Jiufen's history is deeply intertwined with the gold mining boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The discovery of gold in the area transformed Jiufen from a remote village into a bustling mining town. The town's prosperity attracted people from all over Taiwan and beyond, leading to a unique cultural mix. After the gold rush subsided, Jiufen gradually declined, but its distinctive architecture and stunning scenery were rediscovered in the 1990s, leading to its revival as a popular tourist destination. It is said that the animated movie "Spirited Away" was inspired by the scenery of Jiufen. A visit to Jiufen Old Street is a feast for the senses.
