Shifen Old Street Guide

Railside Delights: Discover Shifen Old Street's Unique Charm Guide

Shifen Old Street is a unique and bustling street in Pingxi, Taiwan, famous for its railway tracks running directly through the heart of the street. This unusual feature creates a lively and exciting atmosphere, as visitors can stroll along the tracks, browse the shops, and release sky lanterns all in the same space. It's a truly unforgettable experience that blends history, culture, and delicious food. Like Pingxi, Shifen's history is intertwined with the coal mining industry. The railway tracks were originally built to transport coal from the mines to other parts of Taiwan. As the coal industry declined, Shifen transformed into a popular tourist destination, capitalizing on its unique railway setting and the sky lantern tradition. The old railway station has been preserved and now serves as a reminder of the area's industrial past. Tourists visiting Shifen Old Street can enjoy a variety of activities. The most popular is releasing a sky lantern with personalized wishes written on it. Many shops along the tracks sell lanterns and provide assistance with writing and releasing them. You can also explore the shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, and delicious street food. Be sure to try the famous Shifen fried chicken wings stuffed with rice, a local culinary specialty. Remember to be mindful of the trains that still occasionally pass through the street!
