Jiji Old Street Guide

Step Back in Time: Explore the Charm of Jiji Old Street Guide

Welcome to Jiji Old Street, a delightful journey into Taiwan's past! This charming street, located in the heart of Jiji Township, Nantou County, offers a glimpse into a simpler time with its traditional architecture, local crafts, and mouthwatering street food. It's a perfect destination for travelers seeking an authentic Taiwanese experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Prepare to be captivated by the nostalgic atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the locals. Jiji Old Street's history is deeply intertwined with the Jiji Line, a branch railway line that played a crucial role in transporting timber and agricultural products during the Japanese colonial period. The street flourished as a commercial hub, serving the needs of the railway workers and the surrounding communities. While the devastating 921 earthquake in 1999 caused significant damage, the street has been lovingly restored, preserving its historical character and cultural significance. Today, it stands as a testament to the resilience of the Taiwanese people and a reminder of the town's rich heritage. A visit to Jiji Old Street is a feast for the senses. Stroll along the pedestrian-friendly street, browsing the shops selling local handicrafts, souvenirs, and traditional snacks. Sample the region's famous banana cakes, try the savory rice dumplings, or indulge in a refreshing cup of bubble tea. Don't miss the chance to visit the Jiji Train Station, a beautifully preserved wooden structure that serves as a reminder of the town's railway history. You can also rent a bicycle and explore the surrounding countryside, taking in the scenic views of the lush green fields and rolling hills. The street often hosts cultural events and festivals, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
