Kleine Scheidegg Guide
Kleine Scheidegg: Gateway to the Jungfrau Region Guide
Kleine Scheidegg is a mountain pass situated at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. It serves as a crucial transportation hub and a popular starting point for various excursions in the Jungfrau region. With its stunning views, charming restaurants, and access to numerous hiking trails and ski slopes, Kleine Scheidegg is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Swiss Alps. Kleine Scheidegg has been a significant transit point for over a century. The Wengernalpbahn (WAB), one of the longest continuous cogwheel railways in the world, opened in 1893, connecting Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen via Wengen. This railway played a vital role in opening up the region to tourism. Later, the Jungfraubahn, which tunnels through the Eiger and Mönch to reach the Jungfraujoch, also starts from Kleine Scheidegg. The area has thus become a central hub for exploring the high alpine landscape. Kleine Scheidegg offers a wide range of activities. In the summer, hiking is extremely popular, with trails leading to various viewpoints and mountain huts. The Eiger Trail, which runs along the base of the Eiger north face, is a particularly challenging and rewarding hike. In the winter, Kleine Scheidegg transforms into a ski paradise, with access to numerous slopes suitable for all skill levels. Several restaurants and cafes offer traditional Swiss cuisine, including hearty mountain fare like Älplermagronen (Alpine macaroni and cheese) and various meat dishes.
Transportation
Kleine Scheidegg is accessible by train from both Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen via Wengen. Take the Wengernalpbahn (WAB) cogwheel railway from either direction. Wengen is a car-free village, so if coming from Lauterbrunnen, you'll need to take a train to Wengen first, then transfer to the WAB.
