Laténium Guide

Journey Through Time: Unveiling Switzerland's Archaeological Past Guide

Step back in time at the Laténium, Switzerland's largest archaeological museum. Located on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, this museum offers a fascinating journey through the region's rich history, from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages. Discover the stories of the people who inhabited this land thousands of years ago and gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland's cultural heritage. The Laténium is built on the site of a significant archaeological discovery: a Late Iron Age settlement dating back to the La Tène period (around 450 BC to 1st century BC), which gave its name to this era of European history. The museum's exhibits showcase a vast collection of artifacts unearthed from archaeological sites across Switzerland, including tools, weapons, pottery, jewelry, and even reconstructed dwellings. These objects provide invaluable insights into the daily lives, beliefs, and technologies of past civilizations. Visitors can explore the museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions, which are designed to be engaging and informative for all ages. Interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities bring history to life. Don't miss the opportunity to stroll through the archaeological park surrounding the museum, where you can see reconstructed prehistoric structures and experience the landscape as it might have appeared thousands of years ago. While the Laténium doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the nearby town of Hauterive offers several restaurants serving local and international cuisine.
