Bourbaki Panorama Guide
A 360° Time Capsule: Witness History Come Alive at the Bourbaki Panorama Guide
Immerse yourself in a pivotal moment in history at the Bourbaki Panorama in Lucerne. This unique attraction features a colossal circular painting depicting the internment of the French Bourbaki army in Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It's a powerful and moving experience that offers a glimpse into the human cost of war and the humanitarian efforts of the Swiss people. The Bourbaki Panorama was created by Edouard Castres, who witnessed the events firsthand as a Red Cross volunteer. Completed in 1881, the painting is a remarkable feat of artistry and engineering, measuring over 100 meters in length and 10 meters in height. The realistic depiction of the soldiers, refugees, and Swiss civilians creates a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. The panorama is housed in a purpose-built rotunda, further enhancing the sense of being transported back in time. Visitors can walk around the interior of the rotunda, taking in the full scope of the panorama. Audio guides are available in multiple languages, providing historical context and insights into the painting's creation. The adjacent museum features exhibits on the Franco-Prussian War, the history of the Bourbaki army, and the role of the Red Cross. While the Bourbaki Panorama doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the surrounding area offers a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy traditional Swiss dishes.
