Devil's Bridge (Teufelsbrücke) Guide
Conquer the Gorge: Experience the Legend of Devil's Bridge Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by the Devil's Bridge, a dramatic and historically significant landmark nestled in the rugged Schöllenen Gorge near Andermatt. This iconic bridge, actually a series of bridges built over centuries, spans the turbulent Reuss River, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the ingenuity and perseverance of those who dared to tame this formidable landscape. The surrounding scenery, with its towering cliffs and rushing waters, adds to the bridge's mystique and makes it a must-see for any visitor to the region. The legend of the Devil's Bridge dates back to the 13th century when the people of Uri struggled to build a bridge across the treacherous Schöllenen Gorge. Frustrated by their repeated failures, they are said to have made a pact with the Devil: he would build the bridge, and in return, he would receive the soul of the first being to cross it. The Devil, true to his word, constructed the bridge, but the clever villagers sent a goat across first, outsmarting him. Enraged, the Devil attempted to destroy the bridge with a massive rock, but an old woman painted a cross on the rock, causing it to lose its power and fall short. This rock, known as the Devil's Stone, can still be seen near Göschenen. The current stone is a replacement for the original, which was moved in 1977. Today, visitors can explore the Devil's Bridge and its surroundings, taking in the stunning views and learning about its fascinating history. Walk across the modern bridge, which offers a safe and accessible way to experience the gorge. Visit the Devil's Stone, a reminder of the legend. Hike along the well-maintained trails that wind through the area, providing different perspectives of the bridge and the gorge. The nearby Suvorov Monument, dedicated to the Russian soldiers who fought here in 1799, adds another layer of historical significance to the site.
