Vildmarksvägen (Wilderness Road) Guide
Sweden's Untamed Beauty: Drive the Vildmarksvägen Guide
Embark on an unforgettable road trip along the Vildmarksvägen, or Wilderness Road, one of Sweden's most scenic and breathtaking routes. This 500-kilometer (310-mile) journey takes you through the heart of Swedish Lapland, showcasing stunning landscapes of towering mountains, pristine lakes, cascading waterfalls, and vast forests. Prepare to be captivated by the raw beauty and tranquility of this remote and unspoiled region. The Vildmarksvägen has a relatively recent history as a tourist route, officially opening in the 1960s. However, the areas it traverses have been inhabited by the Sami people for centuries. The road was built to connect remote communities and provide access to natural resources. Today, it offers visitors a chance to experience the unique culture and traditions of the Sami people, as well as the incredible natural wonders of Swedish Lapland. Keep an eye out for reindeer grazing along the roadside – a common sight in this region! Driving the Vildmarksvägen is an adventure in itself. Stop at scenic viewpoints to admire the panoramic vistas, hike to the top of Stekenjokk Plateau for breathtaking views, and visit the Trappstegsforsarna waterfalls, where the water cascades down a series of natural steps. In the summer, enjoy hiking, fishing, and canoeing in the numerous lakes and rivers. In the winter, experience the magic of the Northern Lights and try snowmobiling or cross-country skiing. While on the road, be sure to sample local delicacies like reindeer meat, cloudberries, and traditional Sami bread. Many small cafes and restaurants along the route offer authentic Swedish and Sami cuisine.
