Bonnstan Guide
Bonnstan: Step Back in Time at Sweden's Largest Church Town Guide
Journey back in time at Bonnstan, one of Sweden's best-preserved and largest church towns. Located just outside Skellefteå (a short trip from Skelleftehamn), Bonnstan offers a unique glimpse into the religious and social life of northern Sweden from centuries past. This remarkable collection of wooden houses, clustered around the Skellefteå Church, is a living museum that transports you to a different era. Bonnstan's history dates back to the 17th century when farmers from the surrounding countryside built small wooden cottages near the church. These cottages served as temporary lodgings for people attending church services and markets, as travel distances were long and arduous. Over time, Bonnstan grew into a substantial village, reflecting the importance of the church in the lives of the local community. Today, many of the cottages are still owned by descendants of the original families, preserving the traditions and heritage of this unique place. Visitors to Bonnstan can explore the narrow lanes and admire the well-preserved wooden cottages, each with its own unique character. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the history and culture of the church town. During the summer months, Bonnstan comes alive with various events, including traditional markets, craft fairs, and religious festivals. While Bonnstan itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the nearby Skellefteå offers opportunities to sample local delicacies such as "pitepalt" (potato dumplings) and fresh seafood from the Bothnian Sea.
