ICEHOTEL Guide
ICEHOTEL: Sleep in a Work of Art, Rebuilt Every Year Guide
Prepare to be amazed by ICEHOTEL, a truly unique and ephemeral experience nestled in the heart of Swedish Lapland. More than just a hotel, it's a constantly evolving art installation crafted entirely from ice and snow from the Torne River. Each year, artists from around the globe gather to design and sculpt the hotel's rooms, suites, and public spaces, making every visit a completely new adventure. Imagine drifting off to sleep surrounded by intricate ice carvings, a truly unforgettable and magical experience. The ICEHOTEL's story began in 1989 when a group of Japanese ice sculptors visited Jukkasjärvi. Inspired by their work, the locals decided to create an ice art exhibition. The following year, the first ICEHOTEL was built, offering a handful of beds for adventurous travelers. Since then, it has grown into a world-renowned destination, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe. The original ICEHOTEL melts each spring, returning to the Torne River, only to be reborn again the following winter. In recent years, ICEHOTEL 365 was introduced, a permanent ice structure that operates year-round thanks to solar power, offering a taste of the ice experience even in the summer months. A visit to ICEHOTEL offers a range of activities. Of course, staying overnight in one of the ice rooms or suites is the main draw, but even if you don't spend the night, you can take a guided tour to admire the incredible artistry. You can also try your hand at ice sculpting, enjoy a drink at the ICEBAR, or even get married in the ICECHURCH. For a truly unique culinary experience, dine at the ICEHOTEL Restaurant, which serves delicious dishes made with local ingredients. While not exclusively ice-themed, the restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience that complements the overall atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to sample local delicacies like reindeer meat or Arctic char.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach ICEHOTEL is by flying into Kiruna Airport (KRN). From the airport, you can take a taxi or a pre-booked transfer to Jukkasjärvi, where the ICEHOTEL is located (approximately 20 minutes). Several tour operators also offer transportation packages. During the winter season, there are often bus services connecting Kiruna city center with Jukkasjärvi, but check the local schedules for availability.
