Sacred Sanctuary: The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) Guide

The Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and is considered one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, a symbol of immense religious and cultural significance. The temple's stunning architecture, intricate carvings, and spiritual atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Sri Lanka. The history of the Temple of the Tooth Relic is intertwined with the history of the tooth relic itself. After the Buddha's cremation, his left canine tooth was preserved and eventually brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD. It was believed that whoever possessed the tooth held the right to rule the country. Over the centuries, the relic was moved to various locations, eventually finding its permanent home in Kandy during the reign of King Vimaladharmasuriya I in the 16th century. The temple has been rebuilt and renovated several times, reflecting the changing architectural styles of different eras. Visitors can witness the daily rituals and ceremonies performed at the temple, including the Thevava (offerings) and the drumming ceremonies. While viewing the actual tooth relic is rare, the atmosphere of devotion and reverence is palpable. Explore the temple complex, admiring the intricate carvings, paintings, and architecture. The annual Esala Perahera, a grand procession featuring dancers, drummers, and elephants, is a spectacular event held in July or August and is a highlight for many visitors.
