Lipton's Seat gets its name from Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea magnate who used to survey his vast tea empire from this very spot. He would often sit here, enjoying the stunning scenery and overseeing the operations of his plantations. The area was once part of the Dambatenne Tea Estate, one of Lipton's largest and most successful ventures. Today, a statue of Sir Thomas Lipton stands at the summit, a tribute to his contribution to the Sri Lankan tea industry. The journey to Lipton's Seat is an adventure in itself. You can hike, take a tuk-tuk, or drive up the winding road through the tea plantations. The hike is particularly rewarding, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the landscape and interact with the local tea pickers. Once at the top, take your time to soak in the views, capture stunning photographs, and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea from one of the small tea stalls. The local vendors also sell simple snacks like roti and vadai, perfect for a quick bite while enjoying the scenery.
Transportation
The most common way to reach Lipton's Seat is by tuk-tuk from Haputale town. Negotiate the price beforehand. Alternatively, you can hire a jeep or car, especially if you're traveling in a group. Hiking is also an option, but it's a steep climb of approximately 7km from the Dambatenne Tea Factory. Bus No. 401 from Haputale to Dambatenne Tea Factory, then take a tuk-tuk or walk to Lipton's Seat.
