Real Cartuja de Valldemossa (Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa) Guide

A Sanctuary of Serenity: Discover the Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa Guide

Escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and step into the tranquil world of the Real Cartuja de Valldemossa, a former Carthusian monastery nestled in the picturesque village of Valldemossa, Mallorca. This stunning complex, with its ornate architecture and serene gardens, offers a glimpse into the lives of monks, kings, and artists who have graced its halls. Prepare to be captivated by its beauty and rich history. The Royal Charterhouse's story began in the 14th century when King James II of Majorca established a royal residence on the site. In 1399, it was transformed into a Carthusian monastery, a place of solitude and contemplation for the monks. Over the centuries, the monastery underwent several renovations and expansions, resulting in the stunning architectural blend we see today. Perhaps its most famous residents were Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, who spent the winter of 1838-39 here, a period that profoundly influenced their lives and work. Today, visitors can explore the various cells (monks' living quarters), the church, the cloister, and the beautiful gardens. Don't miss the Chopin museum, which showcases the composer's piano and other artifacts from his time in Valldemossa. The Charterhouse also hosts regular concerts and cultural events. While Valldemossa is not particularly known for a unique dish within the Charterhouse, the village itself offers a taste of Mallorcan cuisine. Be sure to try "coca de patata," a sweet potato cake that is a local specialty.

Transportation

The most convenient way to reach Valldemossa is by bus from Palma de Mallorca. Take the EMT bus line 210 from Palma Intermodal Station (Estació Intermodal).
