Artistic Haven: Explore the Bohemian World of Santiago Rusiñol Guide

The Cau Ferrat Museum is a must-visit for art lovers and those interested in the bohemian history of Sitges. This unique museum was once the home and studio of the Catalan artist Santiago Rusiñol, a prominent figure in the Modernista movement. It houses a fascinating collection of his own works, as well as pieces by other renowned artists, including El Greco and Ramon Casas. The museum offers a glimpse into the artistic and intellectual life of late 19th and early 20th century Catalonia. Santiago Rusiñol acquired the two fishermen's houses that now comprise the Cau Ferrat in 1893. He transformed them into a vibrant and eclectic space, filled with paintings, sculptures, ceramics, wrought iron, and antique furniture. Rusiñol hosted numerous artistic gatherings and festivals at Cau Ferrat, making it a hub for the Modernista movement. After his death in 1931, the house was bequeathed to the town of Sitges and opened as a museum in 1933. Visitors can wander through the museum's rooms, admiring the diverse collection and soaking in the atmosphere of Rusiñol's artistic haven. Highlights include his paintings of gardens and landscapes, his collection of antique glass, and the two original El Greco paintings. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year. While visiting, consider trying "xató," a traditional Sitges salad made with endive, salt cod, tuna, olives, and a special romesco sauce. Many local restaurants serve this regional specialty.

Transportation

The Cau Ferrat Museum is located in the old town of Sitges, very close to the Church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla. It's easily accessible on foot from most parts of the town. **Bus:** Similar to the Church, several bus lines connect Sitges to nearby towns and Barcelona. From the Sitges bus station, it's a short walk to the museum. Look for buses that stop at "Sitges Centre" or near the "Ajuntament" (Town Hall).
