Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse Guide
Edge of the World: Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse Guide
Venture to the southwesternmost point of Formentera and discover the Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse, a dramatic and captivating landmark. This iconic lighthouse stands guard over the rugged coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the African coast on clear days. Prepare to be awestruck by the raw beauty of the landscape and the sense of isolation and tranquility that permeates this unique location. The Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse was built in the early 20th century to guide ships navigating the treacherous waters around Formentera. Its strategic location and powerful beam have helped prevent countless shipwrecks over the years. The lighthouse is named after the Barbary pirates who once roamed these waters, adding a touch of intrigue and history to the site. Visitors can explore the lighthouse grounds, climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views, and descend into the underground cave that leads to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the sea. The area is perfect for hiking and exploring the rugged coastline. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery and the dramatic sunsets. Note that access to the lighthouse by car is restricted during peak season, and a shuttle bus is often in operation.
Transportation
During peak season (typically June to September), access to Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse by private vehicle is restricted. A shuttle bus service operates from a designated parking area further inland. Outside of peak season, you can drive directly to the lighthouse. From Sant Francesc Xavier, take the PM-820 road towards La Mola, then follow the signs to Cap de Barbaria. Be prepared for a bumpy ride on the unpaved road leading to the lighthouse.
