Illa Mateua Guide
Illa Mateua: Discover a Hidden Gem of the Costa Brava Guide
Escape the crowds and discover the tranquil beauty of Illa Mateua, a small, rocky island just off the coast of L'Escala. This hidden gem offers stunning views, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling, and a sense of peaceful isolation that's hard to find elsewhere. Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or simply seeking a relaxing escape, Illa Mateua promises an unforgettable experience. While Illa Mateua itself is a natural formation, the surrounding area has a rich history. L'Escala has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of Greek and Roman settlements. The island likely served as a lookout point or a refuge for fishermen throughout the centuries. Today, it's primarily a place to appreciate the natural beauty of the Costa Brava. The main activity on Illa Mateua is undoubtedly swimming and snorkeling in its pristine waters. The rocky coastline provides a haven for marine life, making it a fantastic spot to observe colorful fish and other underwater creatures. You can also explore the island's rugged terrain on foot, taking in the panoramic views of the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. For a truly unique experience, consider renting a kayak or paddleboard to explore the island from the water. While there aren't any restaurants directly on the island, you can easily find delicious seafood and traditional Catalan cuisine in the nearby town of L'Escala. Be sure to try the local anchovies, a regional specialty!
Transportation
While you can see the island from the coast, reaching Illa Mateua requires a boat. Several companies in L'Escala offer boat trips and kayak rentals that will take you to the island. You can also swim to the island from some points along the coast, but this is only recommended for strong swimmers due to the rocky shoreline and potential currents. From the center of L'Escala, walk along the Passeig MarĂtim towards the north until you reach the area where boat rentals are available.
