Jewish Quarter Guide
Wander Through History: Discover Girona's Jewish Quarter (Call Jueu) Guide
Step back in time as you explore the Jewish Quarter (Call Jueu) of Girona, one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. This labyrinthine network of narrow streets, stone buildings, and hidden courtyards offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Girona's Jewish community, which thrived here for centuries. Prepare to be transported to another era as you wander through this enchanting neighborhood. Girona's Jewish community dates back to the 12th century, and the Call Jueu became one of the most important Jewish centers in Catalonia. The community flourished for several centuries, contributing significantly to the city's intellectual and economic life. However, in 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain, marking the end of their presence in Girona. Today, the Call Jueu stands as a testament to their legacy. Explore the narrow, winding streets of the Call Jueu, admiring the medieval architecture and soaking up the atmosphere. Visit the Museum of Jewish History, housed in the last synagogue in Girona, to learn more about the history and culture of the Jewish community. Discover hidden courtyards, ancient synagogues, and other historical landmarks. The Call Jueu is also home to several shops selling Jewish-themed souvenirs and crafts. While exploring, keep an eye out for the remnants of mezuzah slots on doorframes, a subtle reminder of the community that once lived here.
