Mount Artxanda has long been a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. In the early 20th century, a funicular railway was built to transport people to the summit, making it easily accessible. During the Spanish Civil War, the mountain served as a strategic point, and remnants of bunkers and fortifications can still be found. Today, it's a place of leisure and enjoyment, offering a glimpse into Bilbao's past while providing stunning views of its present. The main activity on Mount Artxanda is, of course, enjoying the views! Take the funicular up and wander around the summit. There are several walking trails that offer different perspectives of the city and the surrounding landscape. You can also relax in one of the parks or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants. Many of these restaurants specialize in traditional Basque cuisine, offering dishes like grilled meats, seafood, and hearty stews. Be sure to try the local Txakoli wine, a slightly sparkling white wine that pairs perfectly with the regional flavors.
