Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga Bilbao) Guide
Dive into Culture: Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao's Artistic Hub Guide
Step into a world of creativity and innovation at Azkuna Zentroa, formerly known as Alhóndiga Bilbao. This iconic building, a masterpiece of industrial architecture transformed into a vibrant cultural center, is a must-see for any visitor to Bilbao. More than just a building, Azkuna Zentroa is a dynamic space where art, culture, and community converge, offering a diverse range of activities and experiences for all ages. Originally designed as a wine warehouse by architect Ricardo Bastida in the early 20th century, the Alhóndiga Bilbao served as a vital storage facility for the city's burgeoning wine trade. However, with the decline of the wine industry, the building fell into disuse. In the early 2000s, renowned French designer Philippe Starck was commissioned to revitalize the space, transforming it into the modern cultural center we see today. Starck's design cleverly preserved the building's original structure while adding contemporary elements, creating a unique blend of old and new. The most striking feature is the 43 unique columns supporting the building's roof, each designed by a different artist. Azkuna Zentroa offers a wide array of activities, including art exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, workshops, and performances. Visitors can explore the building's various spaces, including the Mediateka BBK library, the fitness center with its rooftop swimming pool (featuring a glass bottom!), and the numerous cafes and restaurants. While Azkuna Zentroa itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, its restaurants offer a diverse range of cuisines, from traditional Basque dishes to international flavors. The building also hosts regular food-related events and workshops.
