Old Town of Baiona Guide

Step Back in Time: Discover the Charm of Baiona's Old Town Guide

Welcome to the Old Town of Baiona, a captivating historical enclave nestled on the Galician coast of Spain. Prepare to be transported back in time as you wander through its labyrinthine cobblestone streets, lined with ancient stone buildings adorned with flower-filled balconies. This is a place where history whispers from every corner, where the echoes of explorers and seafarers still resonate, and where the vibrant culture of Galicia comes alive. Baiona's Old Town boasts a rich history, most notably as the first European port to receive news of Columbus's discovery of America in 1493. The caravel "La Pinta" landed here, bringing tales of a new world. The town's strategic location made it a vital trading post and a target for pirates and invaders, resulting in the construction of the impressive Monterreal Fortress (now a Parador hotel) that dominates the landscape. Walking through the Old Town, you'll encounter historical landmarks like the Ex-Colegiata de Santa María, a stunning Romanesque church, and numerous "pazos," traditional Galician manor houses, each with its own unique story to tell. Explore the Old Town at your own pace, getting lost in its charming alleyways. Visit the Ex-Colegiata de Santa María, marvel at the architecture, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Stroll along the harbor, watch the fishing boats bobbing in the water, and imagine the arrival of La Pinta. Indulge in the local culinary scene by sampling fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants and tapas bars. Be sure to try "pulpo a la gallega" (Galician-style octopus) and "empanada gallega" (Galician pie), accompanied by a glass of Albariño wine, a local specialty. The Old Town is a feast for the senses, offering a truly immersive experience of Galician history, culture, and cuisine.
