Odongdo Island: Camellias in Bloom and Coastal Serenity Guide

Discover the enchanting beauty of Odongdo Island, a small, picturesque island just off the coast of Yeosu. Famous for its vibrant camellia forests that bloom in winter and early spring, Odongdo Island offers a delightful escape into nature. With its scenic walking trails, stunning coastal views, and charming lighthouse, this island is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers. Odongdo Island's name is derived from the paulownia trees (odong in Korean) that once thrived there. While the paulownia trees are less prominent today, the island is now renowned for its camellia forests, which burst into a riot of red blooms from November to April. The island has been carefully preserved as a natural park, showcasing the beauty of the Korean coastline. Explore the island's well-maintained walking trails, which wind through the camellia forests and along the rocky coastline. Visit the Odongdo Lighthouse, offering panoramic views of the surrounding ocean and islands. Take a ride on the "Dragon Train," a novelty train that circles the island. Enjoy the fresh sea air and the peaceful atmosphere. While Odongdo Island doesn't have a unique culinary tradition of its own, you can easily access the diverse seafood restaurants in Yeosu city center after your visit.

Odongdo Island is connected to the mainland by a breakwater, making it easily accessible by foot. You can walk from the Odongdo entrance near the Expo Ocean Park. Alternatively, you can take the 'Dragon Train' from the entrance to the island. From Yeosu Expo Station, it's a short walk to the Odongdo entrance.
