Manjanggul Lava Tube Guide
Journey to the Earth's Depths: Explore Manjanggul Lava Tube Guide
Prepare to be amazed by Manjanggul Lava Tube, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the longest lava tubes in the world. This natural wonder offers a unique opportunity to descend into the earth and witness the incredible geological formations created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Explore the vast caverns, marvel at the lava stalactites and stalagmites, and discover the diverse ecosystem that thrives in this subterranean environment. Manjanggul Lava Tube was formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when lava flowed from the Geomunoreum volcano. As the lava cooled and solidified on the surface, the molten lava continued to flow beneath, creating a hollow tube. Over time, the tube was further shaped by erosion and the deposition of minerals, resulting in the stunning formations we see today. The tube is home to a variety of unique creatures, including bats, spiders, and insects, some of which are endemic to the area. Visitors can explore a designated section of the lava tube, equipped with walkways and lighting to ensure safety and minimize disturbance to the environment. The temperature inside the tube remains consistently cool, around 11-21°C (52-70°F), so it's advisable to wear a light jacket. Keep an eye out for the various lava formations, such as the lava stalactites, lava stalagmites, and lava shelves. The tube is also home to a 7.6-meter-high lava column, the largest known lava column in the world. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the tube itself, nearby restaurants offer delicious Jeju cuisine, including black pork and seafood dishes.
