Chuam Chotdae Rock Guide
Chuam Chotdae Rock: Where Nature Paints a Seascape Masterpiece Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by Chuam Chotdae Rock, a collection of uniquely shaped rock formations jutting dramatically from the sea in Donghae. This isn't just a scenic viewpoint; it's a natural sculpture garden carved by the relentless forces of wind and wave over millennia. The name "Chotdae" translates to "Candlestick," and you'll quickly understand why as you gaze upon the towering rocks resembling giant candles reaching for the sky. The area is particularly stunning at sunrise, when the golden light bathes the rocks in a warm glow, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle. While the rocks themselves are the main attraction, the surrounding area offers a glimpse into the local culture and history. Legend has it that a husband and wife, tired of each other, were turned into these rocks by the heavens. The smaller rocks are said to be their children. The nearby Chuam Beach is a popular spot for swimming and relaxation during the summer months. You can also explore the small fishing village of Chuam, where you can witness the daily life of the local fishermen and perhaps even sample some fresh seafood. Beyond simply admiring the view, there are several activities to enjoy at Chuam Chotdae Rock. Take a leisurely stroll along the coastal path, capturing stunning photos from various vantage points. For the adventurous, consider kayaking or paddleboarding around the rocks for a closer look. Don't miss the opportunity to indulge in some fresh seafood at one of the restaurants near the beach. Donghae is known for its fresh squid and various seafood stews. Be sure to try the local specialty, *mulhoe*, a spicy raw fish soup, for a truly authentic culinary experience.
