The falls were named by Scottish gold diggers who were working in the area, many of whom hailed from Scotland (hence "Mac" being a common prefix in Scottish surnames). Originally, there was only one stream, but miners blasted the rock to divert the water, creating the two distinct falls we see today. A viewing platform provides excellent vantage points for photography and appreciating the scale of the falls. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views from the viewing platform, learn about the history of the falls at the information boards, and browse the curio stalls selling local crafts and souvenirs. There's also a picnic area where you can relax and enjoy a meal amidst the stunning scenery. While not directly related to the falls, the nearby town of Graskop is famous for its "pancake houses," offering a wide variety of sweet and savory pancakes – a perfect treat after a day of exploring the Panorama Route.
Transportation
Mac Mac Falls is easily accessible by car along the R532, the Panorama Route. It's located between Sabie and Graskop. There is a clearly marked turn-off and ample parking available at the site. The falls are a popular stop on the Panorama Route, making them easy to find.
