Punda Maria: A Birdwatcher's Paradise in Kruger's North Guide

Discover the charm of Punda Maria Rest Camp, a tranquil haven nestled in the northernmost reaches of Kruger National Park. Known as a birdwatcher's paradise, Punda Maria offers a unique and intimate safari experience, far from the bustling crowds of the south. Immerse yourself in the diverse landscapes, from mopani woodlands to lush riverine forests, and prepare to be captivated by the abundance of wildlife. Punda Maria's history is linked to the early days of Kruger National Park. Established in 1919, it was one of the first rest camps in the park, named after the local Venda chief, Maria. The camp served as a vital outpost for rangers and researchers, playing a crucial role in the park's conservation efforts. Its remote location has helped preserve its unique character and natural beauty. At Punda Maria, you can enjoy a variety of activities, including guided game drives, bush walks, and birdwatching excursions. The camp itself offers comfortable accommodation options, from bungalows to campsites. The nearby Mahonie Loop is a popular route for self-drive safaris, offering excellent opportunities to spot a wide range of animals and birds. The camp also has a swimming pool and a shop selling basic supplies. While Punda Maria doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the camp restaurant offers a selection of South African dishes, including traditional stews and grilled meats.
