Monkeyland at Garden Route Guide

Monkeyland: A Free-Roaming Primate Sanctuary Guide

Monkeyland is the world's first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. Located in Plettenberg Bay along South Africa's scenic Garden Route, it offers a unique and ethical wildlife experience. Unlike traditional zoos, Monkeyland provides a safe and natural environment where primates from around the globe can roam freely within a protected forest. It's a must-visit for animal lovers and anyone interested in primate conservation. Monkeyland was established in 1998 with the aim of rescuing and rehabilitating primates who were previously kept as pets, used in research, or displaced from their natural habitats. The sanctuary provides a haven for these animals, allowing them to live in a social environment that mimics their natural behaviour. The primates are not forced to interact with visitors, and their well-being is always the top priority. Visitors can explore the sanctuary on guided tours led by knowledgeable rangers. These tours provide fascinating insights into the lives of the primates, their individual stories, and the challenges they face in the wild. You'll have the opportunity to observe a variety of species, including lemurs, gibbons, capuchins, and squirrel monkeys, as they swing through the trees, forage for food, and interact with each other. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Monkeyland, Plettenberg Bay offers a wide range of restaurants serving fresh seafood and local cuisine.
