Zeitz MOCAA Guide
Zeitz MOCAA: A Modern Masterpiece of African Art Guide
Welcome to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), a groundbreaking institution dedicated to showcasing contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. Housed in a repurposed historic grain silo complex at the V&A Waterfront, the museum is a visual spectacle both inside and out. Prepare to be captivated by thought-provoking exhibitions, innovative installations, and a celebration of the diverse artistic voices shaping the African continent. The Zeitz MOCAA's history is intertwined with the industrial past of Cape Town. The Grain Silo Complex, originally built in 1921, was once the tallest building in South Africa and a vital hub for grain storage and export. After falling into disuse, the complex was reimagined by renowned British architect Thomas Heatherwick, who transformed the concrete structure into a stunning architectural marvel. The museum opened its doors in 2017, marking a significant moment for the recognition and promotion of African art on a global scale. Visitors to Zeitz MOCAA can explore a vast collection of contemporary art across nine floors, featuring paintings, sculptures, photography, video installations, and performance art. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, artist talks, and educational programs. Don't miss the opportunity to wander through the unique silo tubes, now transformed into exhibition spaces, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and harbor from the rooftop terrace. The museum shop offers a curated selection of art books, prints, and crafts. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to the museum, the V&A Waterfront offers a wide array of dining options showcasing South African and international cuisine.
