It was granted town privileges in 1249 and became an important trading center. The city flourished throughout the Middle Ages, evidenced by its impressive Gothic architecture, including St. Elisabeth Cathedral, one of the easternmost Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Košice also played a significant role in the Reformation and later became a center of Hungarian culture. Throughout its history, Košice has been influenced by various cultures, including Slovak, Hungarian, German, and Jewish, contributing to its unique character. Explore the magnificent St. Elisabeth Cathedral, climb the St. Urban Tower for panoramic views, and visit the State Theatre Košice for a performance.
