The Old Man of Storr: Hike to a Skye Icon Guide

Embark on an unforgettable hike to the Old Man of Storr, one of the Isle of Skye's most iconic and dramatic landmarks. This towering rock pinnacle, part of the Trotternish Ridge, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Sound of Raasay and the mainland mountains. The hike itself is a rewarding experience, taking you through a surreal landscape of jagged peaks, grassy slopes, and otherworldly rock formations. The Old Man of Storr is a result of a massive landslide that occurred thousands of years ago, creating the unique and dramatic landscape of the Trotternish Ridge. The "Old Man" itself is a 50-meter high rock pinnacle, a remnant of the ancient landslip. The area is steeped in folklore, with tales of giants and mythical creatures adding to its mystique. The Storr has also been a popular filming location, appearing in movies such as "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman." The main activity at the Old Man of Storr is, of course, the hike to the base of the pinnacle and beyond. The trail is well-maintained but can be steep and challenging in places, so wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Allow at least 2-3 hours for the round trip. Once at the top, take your time to soak in the incredible views and explore the surrounding landscape. For experienced hikers, there are opportunities to explore further along the Trotternish Ridge. Remember to bring water and snacks, and be mindful of the environment.
