Fairy Pools Guide
Fairy Pools: Dive into the Magic of Skye Guide
The Fairy Pools, nestled in the foothills of the Black Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye, are a must-see for any visitor seeking natural beauty and a touch of magic. These crystal-clear pools and waterfalls cascade down the rocky landscape, creating a breathtaking scene that feels straight out of a fairytale. Whether you're an avid swimmer, a keen photographer, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Fairy Pools offer an unforgettable experience. The Fairy Pools are a natural formation carved out by the River Brittle over thousands of years. The water originates from the Cuillin mountains, known for their dark, jagged peaks. While there's no specific historical event tied to the pools, local folklore suggests that fairies once bathed in these pristine waters, hence the name. The area remains largely untouched, preserving its raw and untamed beauty. The main activity at the Fairy Pools is, of course, exploring the pools themselves. Brave souls can take a dip in the icy-cold waters (wetsuits are highly recommended!), while others can enjoy a scenic walk along the riverbank. The pools offer fantastic opportunities for photography, with the dramatic mountain backdrop and the clear, turquoise water creating stunning images. Remember to wear appropriate footwear as the rocks can be slippery. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the Fairy Pools, nearby towns like Carbost offer traditional Scottish fare, including fresh seafood and hearty stews.
Transportation
The Fairy Pools are best accessed by car. From Portree, take the A87 towards Broadford, then turn onto the B8009 towards Carbost. Follow signs for the Fairy Pools car park. From the car park, it's a 20-30 minute walk to the pools themselves. There is a bus service (Stagecoach route 51) that runs between Portree and Carbost, but it's still a walk from the Carbost stop to the Fairy Pools.
