Uncover the Past: Journey Through Kittitian History at the National Museum Guide
Step back in time at the National Museum of Saint Kitts, located in the heart of Basseterre. Housed in the historic Old Treasury Building, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's rich and complex history, from its indigenous roots to its colonial past and its journey to independence. Prepare to be enlightened by the stories and artifacts that shaped this vibrant Caribbean nation. The Old Treasury Building, which houses the museum, dates back to 1894 and served as the island's treasury for many years. The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including the island's Amerindian heritage, the arrival of European settlers, the sugar industry and its impact on the island's economy and society, the struggle for emancipation, and the island's path to independence in 1983. You'll find artifacts, documents, photographs, and interactive displays that bring the past to life. While the museum itself doesn't have a culinary focus, Basseterre is a great place to sample local Kittitian cuisine. Look for restaurants serving dishes like goat water (a hearty stew), saltfish and dumplings, and conch fritters. Be sure to try some of the local rum punch – a refreshing and potent Caribbean cocktail!
