Honoring a Legacy: Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International Guide

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. Located near Volcanoes National Park, the organization's research center and museum offer visitors a unique opportunity to learn about the life and work of Dian Fossey, the renowned primatologist who dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas. Dian Fossey's pioneering research in the Virunga Mountains revolutionized our understanding of gorillas and brought their plight to the world's attention. She established the Karisoke Research Center in 1967 and spent nearly two decades studying gorilla families, fighting against poaching, and advocating for their conservation. Her work laid the foundation for the successful gorilla tourism industry that exists today, which contributes significantly to their protection. Tragically, Fossey was murdered in 1985, but her legacy lives on through the work of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Visitors to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund can tour the museum, which showcases exhibits about Fossey's life, her research, and the ongoing conservation efforts. You can learn about gorilla behavior, ecology, and the threats they face. The center also offers educational programs and opportunities to support their work. While gorilla trekking permits are separate and managed by the Rwandan Development Board, a visit to the Fossey Fund provides valuable context and enhances your understanding of these magnificent creatures.

Transportation
