Peterhof Palace Guide
The Russian Versailles: Fountains, Gardens, and Imperial Grandeur Guide
Discover the splendor of Peterhof Palace, often referred to as the "Russian Versailles." This magnificent estate, located on the Gulf of Finland, is renowned for its stunning fountains, elaborate gardens, and opulent palaces. Built by Peter the Great in the early 18th century, Peterhof was intended to rival the grandeur of European royal residences and showcase Russia's growing power. Peterhof's history is intertwined with Peter the Great's vision of a modern, Europeanized Russia. He personally oversaw the design and construction of the palace and its surrounding gardens, drawing inspiration from Versailles and other European palaces. The Grand Cascade, a series of elaborate fountains cascading down to the sea, is a testament to his ambition and engineering prowess. Like Catherine Palace, Peterhof suffered significant damage during World War II and has been meticulously restored. Explore the Grand Palace, with its lavishly decorated rooms and impressive art collection. Wander through the Lower Park, a vast expanse of gardens featuring over 150 fountains, including the famous trick fountains that surprise unsuspecting visitors. Take a boat trip on the Gulf of Finland for stunning views of the palace from the sea. Enjoy traditional Russian cuisine at one of the cafes or restaurants within the Peterhof complex.
