Marly Palace Guide
Intimate Elegance: Discover the Charm of Marly Palace at Peterhof Guide
Escape the grandeur of the Grand Palace and discover the intimate elegance of Marly Palace, a charming and understated gem nestled within the Lower Park of Peterhof. This smaller palace offers a glimpse into the more private life of the Russian Tsars, showcasing a refined simplicity that contrasts with the opulent scale of the main palace. Imagine strolling through its meticulously preserved rooms, admiring the exquisite furnishings and artwork, and feeling a connection to the history that unfolded within its walls. Marly Palace was built in the early 18th century by Peter the Great, who named it after the Château de Marly in France, a royal residence he admired. Designed by Johann Braunstein, the palace served as a private retreat for Peter and his close circle. Unlike the Grand Palace, Marly Palace was intended for more intimate gatherings and personal reflection. It housed a collection of Peter's personal belongings, including his tools, books, and artwork. The palace suffered damage during World War II but has been carefully restored to its original appearance. A visit to Marly Palace offers a unique opportunity to experience the more personal side of Russian Imperial history. Explore the palace's meticulously restored rooms, admiring the period furniture, artwork, and personal artifacts that offer insights into Peter the Great's life and interests. Take a stroll through the surrounding gardens, which are designed in a formal French style and offer stunning views of the Gulf of Finland. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Hermitage Pavilion, another charming retreat within the Lower Park.
