Sucevița Monastery was built in the late 16th century by the Movilă family, a powerful noble family in Moldavia. Construction began in 1583 and continued until 1601. The monastery served as a princely residence, a fortified monastery, and a family necropolis. The "Ladder of Divine Ascent," a prominent fresco on the north wall, is particularly famous for its depiction of angels and demons guiding souls to heaven or hell.
