Rasnov Citadel (Cetatea Râșnov) is a medieval fortress perched atop a rocky hill overlooking the town of Rasnov, near Brasov. This imposing structure offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's history. The citadel's strategic location and robust fortifications made it a vital defensive stronghold throughout the centuries. The citadel's history dates back to the 13th century when it was built by Teutonic Knights to protect the local population from invading Tartar and Ottoman forces. Over the centuries, the citadel was expanded and strengthened by the local Saxon community. Unlike many other fortresses, Rasnov Citadel was primarily a refuge for the villagers rather than a permanent military garrison. During times of siege, the villagers would retreat within its walls, bringing their livestock and supplies with them. The citadel's well, dug deep into the rock, ensured a constant water supply during prolonged sieges. Today, visitors can explore the citadel's well-preserved walls, towers, and courtyards. Wander through the narrow passageways, climb the towers for stunning views, and imagine life within the fortress walls during times of conflict. The citadel also houses a small museum showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to its history. Several shops and restaurants are located within the citadel, offering souvenirs and refreshments. The ascent to the citadel can be made on foot or by taking a funicular.
Transportation
From Brasov, you can take a local bus to Rasnov. Several bus lines operate between Brasov's Autogara 2 (Bus Station 2) and Rasnov. Once in Rasnov, you can either walk uphill to the citadel (approximately a 30-minute walk) or take the funicular.
