Route des 400 Virages: Conquer the Legendary Road to Cilaos Guide

Prepare for an adrenaline-pumping adventure on the Route des 400 Virages (Road of 400 Turns), the legendary mountain road that winds its way into the heart of the Cirque de Cilaos. This iconic road is a feat of engineering, offering breathtaking views and thrilling driving experiences. Whether you're behind the wheel or simply enjoying the ride, the Route des 400 Virages is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Réunion's stunning landscapes. The Route des 400 Virages was built in the 1930s to connect Cilaos to the rest of Réunion. Before its construction, the only way to reach Cilaos was by foot or by mule. The road was a monumental undertaking, requiring extensive blasting and construction work to carve a path through the steep mountain slopes. The road's numerous hairpin turns and narrow sections quickly earned it the nickname "Route des 400 Virages," although the actual number of turns is closer to 300. The main activity on the Route des 400 Virages is, of course, driving (or being driven!). Take your time and enjoy the stunning views at the various viewpoints along the way. Stop at the Voile de la Mariée waterfall for a photo opportunity. Be sure to check your brakes before descending, as the road can be challenging. For those who prefer not to drive, consider hiring a taxi or taking a bus from Saint-Louis. The bus journey is an experience in itself, as the drivers expertly navigate the winding road. Once in Cilaos, you can enjoy hiking, canyoning, and exploring the charming village.

Transportation

The Route des 400 Virages connects Saint-Louis to Cilaos. Several buses make the journey daily. From Saint-Louis, take the Car Jaune (Yellow Bus) line 60 to Cilaos. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Be aware that the bus can get crowded, especially during peak season. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi from Saint-Louis, but this will be more expensive. If driving yourself, be sure to have a reliable vehicle and be comfortable driving on narrow, winding roads.
