Cirque de Cilaos Guide
Breathtaking Beauty: Explore the Heart of Cirque de Cilaos Guide
Prepare to be captivated by the Cirque de Cilaos, a natural amphitheater carved out by erosion in the heart of Reunion Island. This dramatic landscape, accessible only by a winding mountain road, is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking breathtaking views. The cirque is surrounded by towering peaks, including the Piton des Neiges, and dotted with charming villages, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Cirque de Cilaos was formed by the collapse of a volcanic caldera millions of years ago. Over time, erosion sculpted the landscape into the dramatic cirque we see today. The area was initially inhabited by runaway slaves (Marrons) who sought refuge in its remote and inaccessible terrain. Later, the area developed into a spa town, attracting visitors seeking the healing properties of its thermal springs. Today, Cilaos is a popular tourist destination, known for its hiking trails, stunning scenery, and unique cultural traditions. The primary activity in the Cirque de Cilaos is hiking. Numerous trails cater to all levels of experience, from gentle walks to challenging climbs. Popular hikes include the climb to the Piton des Neiges, the Cascade de Bras Rouge trail, and the Sentier des Sources. Beyond hiking, explore the charming town of Cilaos, visit the Maison de la Broderie, and sample the local cuisine. Don't miss the opportunity to try the famous Cilaos wine, grown on the slopes of the cirque, and the aforementioned lentilles de Cilaos.
