Vista do Rei viewpoint Guide
Vista do Rei: Where Azure Meets Emerald Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized at Vista do Rei, arguably the most iconic viewpoint in the Azores! Perched on the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera, this vantage point offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the twin lakes, Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake), separated by a narrow bridge. The contrasting colors of the lakes, reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation, create a truly unforgettable spectacle. The name "Vista do Rei" (King's View) commemorates the visit of King D. Carlos I and Queen D. Amélia of Portugal in 1901. The viewpoint was specifically constructed to provide them with the best possible view of the caldera. Since then, it has become a must-see destination for visitors from around the world, drawn by its unparalleled beauty and historical significance. At Vista do Rei, you can simply soak in the stunning views, capture memorable photos, and breathe in the fresh Azorean air. Explore the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel nearby (at your own risk, as it's in disrepair) for a glimpse into the past and unique photo opportunities. While there are no specific culinary offerings directly at the viewpoint, nearby restaurants in Sete Cidades village offer traditional Azorean dishes.
