Journey to the Center of the Earth: Sao Vicente Caves Guide

The Sao Vicente Caves, located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, offer a fascinating glimpse into the island's volcanic origins. These lava tubes, formed approximately 890,000 years ago, are a unique geological wonder and a popular tourist attraction. A guided tour takes you deep beneath the surface, revealing the impressive scale and intricate formations of the caves. The caves were discovered in 1885 by locals, but it wasn't until 1996 that they were opened to the public after extensive geological studies and preparation for tourism. The Sao Vicente Caves are part of a larger volcanic complex, and their formation is directly linked to the volcanic activity that shaped Madeira Island. The lava tubes were created when the outer layer of molten lava cooled and solidified, while the molten lava continued to flow inside, eventually emptying and leaving behind these impressive underground tunnels. A visit to the Sao Vicente Caves includes a guided tour through the main lava tubes, where you can marvel at the geological formations and learn about the volcanic processes that created them. The tour also includes a visit to the Volcanism Centre, an interactive museum that provides further insights into the geology of Madeira and the formation of the caves. You can also explore the surrounding Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Sao Vicente area.
