Algar do Carvão Guide
Algar do Carvão: Journey to the Heart of a Volcano Guide
Descend into the earth and explore the Algar do Carvão, an ancient lava tube and volcanic chimney that offers a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience. This natural monument allows you to walk inside a dormant volcano, marveling at the geological formations and the ethereal beauty of the underground lake. It's a journey into the heart of Terceira's volcanic past. Algar do Carvão was formed approximately 3,200 years ago during a period of intense volcanic activity. Over time, rainwater seeped through the volcanic rock, creating a stunning underground lake. The stalactites and stalagmites, formed by mineral-rich water dripping over centuries, add to the otherworldly atmosphere. The site was first explored in the late 19th century, and opened to the public in the 20th century, becoming one of Terceira's most popular attractions. Visitors can descend into the Algar do Carvão and explore the vast cavern, marveling at the geological formations and the crystal-clear lake. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the volcano's formation and the unique ecosystem within. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than outside, so it's advisable to bring a light jacket. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the Algar do Carvão itself, the nearby town of Biscoitos is known for its vineyards and wine production.
