Gruta das Torres Guide
Journey to the Center of the Earth: Explore the Gruta das Torres Guide
Discover the mesmerizing Gruta das Torres, the longest lava tube in Portugal, located on the island of Pico in the Azores. This natural wonder offers a unique opportunity to delve into the volcanic origins of the island and witness the fascinating geological formations created by ancient lava flows. Prepare to be amazed by the subterranean world hidden beneath the surface. The Gruta das Torres was formed approximately 1,500 years ago by lava flows from the Cabeço Bravo volcano. As the outer layers of lava cooled and solidified, the molten lava continued to flow through the interior, creating a network of tunnels and chambers. The cave remained largely unexplored until 1990, when it was officially discovered and subsequently opened to the public as a geological monument. Visitors can embark on guided tours through a portion of the lava tube, equipped with helmets and flashlights to navigate the dimly lit passages. The tour guides provide insightful commentary on the geological processes that shaped the cave, pointing out unique formations such as lava stalactites, lava benches, and gas bubbles frozen in time. The experience is both educational and awe-inspiring, offering a glimpse into the raw power of nature.
