Gorreana Tea Factory Guide
Gorreana Tea: Europe's Only Tea Plantation Guide
The Gorreana Tea Factory is a unique and fascinating destination, being the oldest and only tea plantation in Europe. Located on the island of São Miguel, it offers visitors a glimpse into the world of tea production, from the fields to the factory floor. It's a truly unique experience to see tea grown in a European climate. The Gorreana Tea Factory has been producing tea since 1883, when the Hintze Ribeiro family began cultivating tea plants imported from Brazil. The volcanic soil and mild, humid climate of São Miguel proved ideal for tea cultivation. The factory has remained in operation ever since, using traditional methods and machinery to produce high-quality green and black teas. It's a testament to the family's dedication and the unique terroir of the Azores. Visitors can take a free tour of the tea plantation and factory, learning about the history of Gorreana Tea and the tea-making process. You can walk through the tea fields, observe the tea leaves being harvested and processed, and sample the different varieties of tea produced on site. The factory also has a shop where you can purchase Gorreana Tea and other local products. The tea itself is a unique culinary experience, offering a distinct flavor profile influenced by the Azorean climate and soil.
