Terra Nostra Park: A Volcanic Paradise of Botanical Wonders Guide

Welcome to Terra Nostra Park, a stunning botanical garden nestled in the volcanic Furnas Valley of São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. This lush oasis offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and therapeutic thermal waters. Prepare to be captivated by its diverse plant collections, serene landscapes, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the heart of a volcanic landscape. The park's history dates back to 1775 when Thomas Hickling, an American merchant, established a summer residence here. He created a romantic garden, planting trees and introducing exotic species. Over the years, the park expanded and evolved, becoming a renowned botanical garden showcasing plants from around the world. The iconic thermal pool, rich in iron and other minerals, was added later, drawing visitors seeking its purported health benefits. Visitors can explore the park's diverse gardens, including collections of camellias, ferns, and endemic Azorean plants. The highlight for many is the large thermal pool, where you can soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters. There are also walking trails that wind through the park, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Don't miss the opportunity to try "Cozido das Furnas," a traditional Azorean stew cooked underground using volcanic heat, often available at nearby restaurants.
