Furnas Hot Springs Guide
Furnas Hot Springs: Nature's Spa in a Volcanic Valley Guide
Welcome to Furnas Hot Springs, a truly unique and unforgettable experience nestled in the volcanic Furnas Valley on São Miguel Island, Azores. This isn't your typical spa day; it's a journey into the heart of geothermal activity, where you can immerse yourself in naturally heated mineral-rich waters surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation. Prepare to be amazed by the power and beauty of nature as you relax and rejuvenate in this extraordinary setting. The Furnas Valley's volcanic history is what makes these hot springs so special. The area is a dormant volcanic crater, and the geothermal activity beneath the surface heats the groundwater, creating a variety of hot springs with different mineral compositions and temperatures. For centuries, locals have harnessed this natural resource for cooking, bathing, and even heating their homes. The most famous example is "Cozido das Furnas," a traditional stew cooked underground using the volcanic heat. A visit to Furnas Hot Springs offers a range of activities. You can soak in the various pools at Terra Nostra Park, each with its own unique mineral properties and therapeutic benefits. Don't miss the iconic orange-colored pool, rich in iron. Beyond the pools, explore the stunning Terra Nostra Garden, a botanical paradise filled with exotic plants and trees from around the world. You can also witness the preparation of Cozido das Furnas and sample this unique culinary creation at a local restaurant. The village of Furnas itself is charming and offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the volcanic landscape.
