Furnas Botanical Garden: A Green Escape in a Volcanic Valley Guide

The Furnas Botanical Garden, often referred to as Terra Nostra Park (as it's the main attraction within), is a must-see destination in Furnas, São Miguel Island. This verdant paradise offers a tranquil escape with its diverse collection of plants, serene walking paths, and the famous thermal pool. It's a place where nature and history intertwine, providing a unique and unforgettable experience. While often considered synonymous with Terra Nostra Park, the botanical garden aspect highlights the incredible plant diversity cultivated within. The garden's origins are linked to Thomas Hickling's initial estate, where he began introducing exotic flora. Over time, the garden expanded, showcasing a wide array of species from around the globe, carefully curated and maintained to thrive in the unique volcanic environment of Furnas. Explore the themed gardens, including the camellia collection, fern garden, and areas dedicated to Azorean endemic plants. Take a leisurely stroll along the winding paths, admiring the lush vegetation and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Of course, a dip in the thermal pool is a must! Afterwards, indulge in the local culinary specialty, Cozido das Furnas, cooked using the geothermal heat of the region.
